DUOLOGUES

RAIN

by Philip Jamieson

Suitable for Grade 1

Stage directions

It’s a rainy day in the park. Bev is sitting on a bench, reading a book in one hand and holding up an open umbrella in the other. Zon, from the planet Kewdos, approaches holding an alien writing tablet.

Excerpt

Zon

Pardon me for disturbing you, but may I ask you a question please?

Bev

(Looks up from book) Are you doing some market research?

Zon

Sorry, what is market research?

Bev

It’s when someone asks questions about the things people buy – like how many times a week they buy chocolate, or if they prefer orange or apple juice.

Zon

(Writes a note on the tablet) That’s very interesting. Mar…ket… re…search.

Bev

So, what did you want to ask me?

Zon

Well, you see, I’m doing a different kind of research. My task is to find out why humans do such strange things.

Hints & tips

  • This duologue is ideal for Grade 1 exams – but can also be used at other levels.
  • Either of the characters Bev and Zon can be male or female.
  • Zon is an alien – so you might like to develop a more alien voice for this character.
  • Bev behaves as though it is perfectly normal to meet an Alien.
  • You will need a few props here – a writing tablet such as a iPad, a book and an umbrella.
  • Practice opening and closing the umbrella smoothly.
  • You can use two chairs next to each other to represent the bench.
